Learn More About The Course Program

The curriculum for students enrolled in the Hair Designer program consists of 1350 clock hours of Practical Operations and Technical Instruction, which will include at a minimum the state mandated subject hours listed in the chart below. Instruction will cover the art and science of cosmetology from techniques in hair, business skills, and health and safety practices. This program of study satisfies the requirements of Georgia State Board of Cosmetology and Barbers.

Level 1 
0-250hrs

This foundation course at Albany Beauty Academy concentrates on the fundamentals of haircutting and this program leaves no stone unturned in teaching you the fundamentals. You will learn various cutting techniques, including classic and modern approaches, as well as the use of specialized tools.

Hair color can transform a hairstyle and create a dramatic impact. In this program, you'll delve into the world of color theory and learn how to choose the right hues, tones, and shades to complement your clients' skin tone, eye color, and personal style. From basic color application techniques to advanced color correction methods, you'll acquire the expertise to create stunning color transformations and achieve seamless blends.

Level 2 
251-1,100 hrs

After completing the Level 1 foundation program, learning at Albany Beauty Academy extends to both the classroom and the clinic floor. 

From glamorous red carpet updos to effortless everyday styles, the ability to create beautiful hairstyles is a crucial skill for any hair designer. This program will teach you a wide range of styling techniques, including blowouts, curling, straightening, braiding, and intricate updos. You'll discover how to work with different hair textures, use styling products effectively, and create hairstyles that withstand the test of time.

Being a successful hair designer requires more than just technical skills. In this program, you'll also gain insights into the business side of the industry. You'll learn how to build a strong client base, market your services, manage appointments, and provide exceptional customer service. Additionally, you'll explore the importance of professionalism, including effective communication, time management, and maintaining a positive salon environment.

Maintaining a high standard of sanitation in a salon is of utmost importance to create a safe and hygienic environment for clients. You'll learn advanced sanitation practices to minimize the risk of infections, promote client confidence, and uphold the reputation of your future business

Getting Your Hair Designer License...

Graduation Requirements 

Meeting the requirement of passing the State Board Examination is a prerequisite for obtaining a hair designer license. In addition to meeting the basic Albany Beauty Academy graduation requirements, students are required to successfully complete 1500 clock hours of hair designer training as described above.

Licensing requirements

Applicants must be 17 years of age or older and have a GED or high school diploma to attend school. Applicants must be 18 years old to take State Board Exams. A Hair Designer License will be granted by the state of Georgia only after the student has successfully completed and graduated from the Hair Designer course satisfactorily of as described above and passed the licensing exam (written and practical) with an overall 70%.

Methods of Instruction

Instruction techniques include classroom instruction, lessons, lecture, directed discovery, demonstrations, and the use of audio visual and printed materials. Instructors supervise students as they practice their operations on a live model or mannequin. The use of practical testing criteria and written are utilized to evaluate student progress.

Grading System

Students are evaluated on a regular basis on subject matters. The evaluations are measured on a standard percentile basis and the percentage converted to a letter grade and/or a point grade. The evaluation form reflects the overall attendance and academic progress of the student. Students must maintain a 67% average or better in attendance and a 70 % or better for practical work and theory to maintain satisfactory academic status. The grading system detailed below is the system utilized in the school.

Life After...
After obtaining a license, graduates have numerous opportunities to work in the beauty industry. You can work in a range of settings, including salons, spas, beauty supply stores, and entertainment venues. 

Some graduates may choose to work as independent contractors, while others may seek employment in established salons or franchise chains, as:
  • Hairstylist
  • Color Specialist
  • Session Stylist
  • Salon Stylist
  • Product Line Developer
  • ​Cosmetic or beauty product representative and 
  • ​Salon owner and/or manager.
